Tesco Sligo Store

Tesco Sligo Store

At MFM Joinery, we take pride in delivering high-quality joinery solutions that combine craftsmanship, innovation, and sustainability. We are delighted to have recently completed two significant projects for Tesco at their Sligo store, enhancing both the appearance and performance of key elements of the building while aligning with Tesco’s commitment to sustainable construction practices.

Sustainable Shopfront Upgrade

The first project involved the manufacture and installation of a new shopfront designed to provide a durable, attractive, and low-maintenance solution for this busy retail environment.

To achieve this, we selected Tricoya® high-performance sheet material, renowned for its exceptional durability, dimensional stability, and sustainability credentials. The shopfront components were factory-finished in Anthracite Grey prior to installation, ensuring a consistent, high-quality finish and reducing installation time on site.

Recognising the demands placed on a high-traffic retail environment, stainless steel skirting and corner protection were incorporated into vulnerable locations around the shopfront. These additions help protect against everyday impacts and wear, extending the lifespan of the installation and reducing future maintenance requirements.

Addressing Rooflight Performance Issues

The second project focused on replacing an existing rooflight that had reached the end of its operational life.

Over time, the original double-glazed units had failed significantly, resulting in poor thermal performance and ongoing maintenance concerns. Deficiencies in the existing roof upstand detailing were contributing to heat loss during colder months and intermittent water ingress. In addition, excessive solar gain through the glazing was creating elevated temperatures beneath the rooflight, negatively affecting the fresh produce displayed below.

These issues presented an opportunity to develop a solution that would improve energy efficiency, reduce maintenance requirements, and create a more comfortable environment within the store.

A Sustainable Timber Solution

Following a detailed assessment of the project requirements, Accoya® high-performance timber was selected for the manufacture of the new rooflight structure.

Accoya is widely recognised for its exceptional durability, stability, and sustainability credentials, making it an ideal choice for demanding external applications. The material aligns closely with Tesco’s sustainability objectives and commitment to using environmentally responsible building products wherever possible.

High-Performance Glazing for Improved Comfort and Efficiency

To address the challenges associated with solar gain while maintaining excellent levels of natural daylight, the new rooflight was fitted with high-specification double glazing incorporating SunGuard® SuperNeutral (SN) 70/35 technology.

This advanced glazing solution allows a high level of visible light transmission while significantly reducing solar heat gain. The result is a brighter internal environment without the excessive heat build-up commonly associated with large glazed roof structures.

By reducing solar gain, the new rooflight helps create more stable temperatures within the store while also protecting products displayed beneath from premature deterioration caused by prolonged exposure to heat and sunlight.

Maintenance-Free Performance

To ensure long-term reliability, the glazing system was installed using a maintenance-free roofing solution supplied by Exitex®. This system provides robust weather protection and durability while reducing ongoing maintenance requirements for the client.

Delivering Long-Term Value

These projects demonstrate how carefully considered material selection and design can deliver lasting benefits in commercial environments. By combining sustainable timber products, high-performance glazing, and durable protective detailing, MFM Joinery has helped Tesco improve the performance, appearance, and longevity of key elements of its Sligo store.

We are proud to have partnered on these projects and look forward to continuing to deliver innovative, sustainable joinery solutions for commercial clients across Ireland and beyond.
